Kitchens have always been the centre of the home, if not physically, then metaphorically. They are an extremely important place and often one in which we spend a lot of time. We entertain, gather family, cook sometimes even work, in our kitchens. This is especially true for those of us with kitchen diners, kitchen islands or peninsula islands.
People naturally gather in these places, and with people comes mess and clutter. So we have put together a list of ways you can free up space in your kitchen.
Make The Most Of Vertical Space
Shelves—This may seem an obvious place to begin, but the space above your kitchen worktop is often disregarded. Free up counter space by aiming upwards for your storage. These shelves can hold anything you want within reach. Mason jars of herbs, flour, pasta, and more would be handy in this space. It adds a cosy home cook feel while keeping these essentials close and your worktops clear.
Magnetic wall-mounted knife holders – This is one for those without small children, of course. But wall mounting your knives not only removes the need for a cumbersome knife block but also ensures they are within reach when you need them and safely out of the way when you don’t.
Wall-mounted or shelf-mounted kitchen towel holders – Much like your bathroom towel and paper holder, you may want to try mounting a larger version in your kitchen to hold your kitchen paper towels. This not only frees up the space where a traditional kitchen roll holder would sit, but this also ensures a cleaner and more accessible paper towel.
Sink Covers
Sometimes resembling a large chopping board, sink covers help to extend your worktop space. These can be in stainless steel, wood or even silicone, depending on your aesthetic and needs. There are sink covers to fit almost any sink and purpose, from half covers for chopping and washing vegetables to full covers to place plates and utensils as you cook. It is even possible to get sink covers with draining holes to help with drying dishes. These are especially helpful if the pots are piling up and you are swiftly running out of draining board space.
Make The Most Of Your Cupboards and Drawers
Rethink how you use your cupboards and drawers to help use every inch of space.
Stacking – Invest in boxes and bins that can hold your cleaning supplies, dry goods and all those junk drawer items. In this way, you can consolidate this into one area. If you have space under the sink this is a perfect solution. This not only helps use an awkward space but also keeps these items safe from any water, should the worst happen.
Spice Racks and Drawers – There are lots of different ways to store your spices now, not just in stylish pull-out spice racks but also in stepped drawers. This makes all those hers and spice jars easy to see and access when you’re in the cooking zone.
Risers – This is especially useful for tins, mugs and glasses. Use a stepped display or riser to help stack these items safely and neatly in your cupboards. No more boobytrapped, clumsily stacked mugs to fall out when you open the door.
Lazy Susans – This is another great trick for bottles, herbs, spices and jars. Stack these on a small lazy susan that can fit in your chosen cupboard. Then, when you’re looking, give them a little spin to easily see what you have.
Just Let Go
At the end of the day, the best way to make space is to make room. Take some time to go through what you have and decide if these are items you really need to keep. It can be surprising how time gets away from you, and before you know it, that bottle of sauce is 2 months out of date, and those herbs are looking a little too dry. Think about donating some cookbooks or selling that kitchen gadget you never got around to using.
